I’d been wanting to try Brad’s Grill for a very long time. It was the winner of the Best Pepper Steak and Top South African Steak House Awards two years in a row. I had walked past the restaurant a while back on my way to a sushi place nearby, and the smell got to me first. It was the most beautiful smell ever, and I almost told everyone to cancel the sushi while I tucked into a juicy steak.
I’d seen various and conflicting reviews on this place though, but mostly due to the owner himself and not the food. The food always seemed to be a winner. I wondered if I’d meet this famous Brad.
We did meet him, I assume he’s always there, which is great because it means he obviously cares a lot about the place. I do, however, think he should tone it down a bit. He was very in your face and quite loud. I didn’t feel all that comfortable in the restaurant. Perhaps he’s just very passionate about his restaurant. Having said that, the rest of the staff were lovely and very friendly.
The food was great and definitely one of the nicest steaks I’ve had in a long time. I was told they were very expensive, but I didn’t think so as all the main meals came with either rice, potato or chips, as well as two portions of vegetables. And if you don’t want to spend too much you can come in for their early bird special. As long as you are in by 6pm and out by 8pm then you get major discounts on many of the meals.
We went for the fillet steak, with rice and vegetables and it was delicious. These guys definitely know what they are doing when it comes to meat.

If you’ve never been to Brad’s Grill in Harfield Village, Claremont, it’s definitely worth a visit! Brad’s serves deliciously juicy cuts of free range meat, fish and grills that will make you happy to be a meat eater. It’s warm and friendly atmosphere is great for celebrating special occasions and all ages are welcome. The restaurant is fancy yet relaxed and has something for everyone to enjoy, including wonderfully welcoming and smiley staff. You may even meet Brad himself, as he loves to check in on all his tables.
For starters, I ordered the onion rings, as I’m always interested to see how each establishment does them. The rings were huge, some of the biggest I’ve ever seen. They had a thick layer of batter and were golden brown. What a delicious way to start a meal and help you decide on your main course. I would definitely recommend these as a side or starter. They’re great value for money too!
For mains, I got the 500g ribs with chips and side vegetables. I couldn’t believe the size of the ribs they put in front of me when my meal was served. They were soft, covered in tasty BBQ sauce and weren’t too sweet (I find that’s a common problem in Cape Town). I couldn’t finish my portion, so I had plenty to enjoy the next day as well. The veg was butternut and spinach and was fresh, healthy and wholesome.
For dessert, I had to try the crème brulee. It was a decent sized portion, came with a perfect layer of golden melted sugar on top and was light, creamy and too-die-for! I would definitely recommend the crème brulee at Brad’s Grill. They are also well-known for their pepper steak, which is said to be a must-have!
