Bocca is a newly established Italian-style restaurant on Bree Street, CBD. With its modern flair and Neopolitan pizza, it’s sure to become your new favourite hangout spot. Bocca is a very popular place for after work drinks as the restaurant features a wonderful wooden deck that looks over Bree Street. Sit back, relax and enjoy everything this part of the city has to offer! Bocca serves food from 6PM onwards, but pizza is available all day, every day. They are open till late at night, so it’s the perfect place for a 9PM dinner on a warm summer night. The restaurant also features a lovely inside area with impressive modern décor and a more private loft area where you can sit with bigger groups.
For starters, I had the pizza bread with rosemary, grana padano cheese and olive oil. I love neopolitan pizza because it’s incredibly authentic, soft and tender. I could definitely imagine thoroughly enjoying this with a round of drinks and friends. The flavours are simple, but that’s exactly what I want in my starter! Simple, cleansing and fresh!
For mains, I went with the pizza option again, and tried out The Commercial pizza with mozzarella, bacon, avocado and feta. The quality of the ingredients really impressed me and the raw tomato sauce was light, acidic and perfect for the amount of dough and crispy crust on the pizza. This was one of my absolute favourite pizzas in Cape Town and I would highly recommend Bocca for pizzas. If you’re not in the mood for this specific pizza, you’ll find a ton of delicious and interesting pizza here, like the Lady Zaza with kimchi ginger pork sausage! Bocca also offers a Lunch and Dinner menu that features a great selection of sides, tapas-style plates, paninos, big meals and dessert jars. Yum!
I had the pleasure of visiting this new establishment within only two weeks of its opening, and I was pleasantly surprised to see how busy it was already. I had a chat with the two owners who told me all about their plans and their vision for a proper Italian-inspired space where they serve Neopolitan pizza in true fashion. These guys obviously know what they are doing.
The décor of Bocca is very appealing to me. It’s clean, simple, and somehow manages to look both elegant and rustic at the same time. Gorgeous wood boards line the walls and the big red pizza oven is out on display. There is an upstairs and a downstairs as well as a small outdoor section which will be great for the summer months.
We enjoyed a delicious glass of Shiraz while sampling a few of their pizzas. The pizza that surprised me the most was the simple Magherita, not normally a choice I would ever make due to its lack of toppings. Yet this simple mozzarella, Parmesan, basil and olive oil pizza was delicious. I could easily have just devoured an entire Magherita without so much as looking at anything else.
My husband was a big fan of the Bandera, which was a chilli and tomato-based pizza with mozzarella, chorizo, roasted red pepper and red onion.
Of course, the Commercial pizza was another favourite of the night, which is mozzarella, bacon, avocado and feta. Not your typical Italian pizza, but the owner told us they had to put it on the menu because it is hugely popular, and I had to agree.
I would definitely like to go again. I spotted a great big table upstairs, sectioned off from the rest, which I thought would make a wonderful place to get all my friends together.
