Cascades on the Promenade is a seven-room, four-star hotel with a bistro on Arthurs Road, the heart and soul of Sea Point. The hotel and bistro are named for Cape Town’s famous Beach Road promenade, just a block or two away.
People walk and jog on the promenade all day and night with infants in strollers and with dogs. It’s Cape Town’s playground and has wonderful views of the Atlantic.
The promenade itself is a destination. Dining outside on the patio at Bistro on the Promenade means the air is fresh and moist from the pounding Atlantic surf. This is the Cape of Storms. You may need a blanket — we did when we had breakfast there on an October morning in early spring.
“It’s always cold here,” our waitress told us.
Luckily, the management drapes blankets over every chair in the restaurant. Psychologically this is very comforting and makes you want to continue being nourished after you sit down — with food.
I ordered poached eggs on rustic toasted bread (3o rand or $2.58 USD) with grilled tomatoes. It was not only beautifully presented but delicious. My sister got French butter croissant with emmentaler and tomatoes (38 rand or $3.28 USD). The Bistro bakes its own croissants.
For 95 rand ($8.19 USD) you can get continental breakfast with croissant, pastries, coffee, orange juice, fresh fruit, yogurt, cold meats and cheeses. Internet is free at the restaurant.
You can also order omelettes. The drinks menu includes rooibos cappuccino, lattes, gourmet coffees, smoothies, milkshakes and homemade iced teas.
Later in the day, the bistro is open for lunch, high tea and dinner. What you get, produce wise, is what’s in season. Price wise, it’s almost unparalleled value.
