Aah, Beluga – one just cannot go wrong here. Situated at the Foundry in Green Point, you will love this elegant, spacious and relaxing restaurant.

I have had many a meal at Beluga and will continue to do so. The specials are always a win, the a la carte menu has a really interesting selection which leads one to have a little difficulty in making a choice.

Invariably I will see a meal I’d enjoy, but then continue through the menu constantly changing my mind. This time I initially set my mind on the Angry Chicken curry, but suddenly changed my mind deciding on something a little lighter. Salad it would be. The half portion tuna salad coupled with the half portion sashimi salad sounded perfect – and it was. The tuna was perfection, the salad ingredients fresh and crisp – the dressing made the perfect balance.

The ambiance is always enjoyable, sometimes a little frenetic, but great. Service was snappy and could not be faulted, and value is excellent. I’ll be back, again!

In a hip brick building with al fresco seating in a pedestrian square, Beluga is a fashionable Moet & Chandon-branded restaurant and bar. The interior is modern chic with a nod to the exclusive champagne brand, with massive photo prints of beautiful models sipping bubbly in various locations.

When I dined here mid-week the place was packed. My friend and I sat inside, at the bar, which had comfy leather stools and cool vibe. I love the menu at Beluga, which has loads of delightful seafood offerings, which I always dig over meat.

I started with my favorite sea critter, calamari, which came spiced and served with a spicy peanut dressing here. I also couldn’t resist ordering the seared tuna salad with baby lettuce, avocado, sesame seeds and spicy Asian dressing. Both were mouthwatering. My friend started with a half-dozen oysters, which I admit I snatched one of and wish I’d splurged on some myself. Beyond seafood, of which there is more than I have space to name, there is a springbok carpaccio for turf lovers and a roasted vegetable tarte for vegetarians on the appetizer menu.

Mains are more meat-focused, with a number of steak options plus ribs and the signature “More than Beef Wellington” dish that includes steak and duck liver pate in a puff pastry with beef reduction. The kingclip, tuna and crispy chilli fish mains are stellar, however, if you like fish. And the sushi here is some of the best in town.

Beyond bubbly, Beluga has a curated cocktail list that focuses heavily on martinis and variations of them. There is also an extensive wine list and the bartenders know how to mix pretty much anything properly. Sit at the bar and you’ll often be mixed a special cocktail on the house.

I love Beluga. I love the food, I love the atmosphere, I love the décor. I have only been living in Cape Town for two years and yet I have been back over and over again. I actually first discovered Beluga when I was living in Durban, and it was my first proper experience of good sushi.

So, after a very long and stressful week, it was with great excitement that I headed off to Beluga once again on a lovely Friday evening with my husband. It’s a great place to go and unwind and we always know we’ll be getting great food and good service. We ordered a bottle of wine and felt ourselves start to relax.

Beluga, despite being a fine dining restaurant, has one of the best sushi deals in Cape Town as they offer discounted platters every day:

    YELLOW PLATE – R135 (normal price R310)
Salmon roses (4), California rolls (4) firecracker rolls (8), salmon and prawn nigiri (4)

    GREEN PLATE – R145 (normal price R317)
Salmon roses (4), seared tuna, salmon and tuna sashimi (6), rainbow rolls (6), California rolls (4)

    BLUE PLATE – R165 (normal price R485)
Salmon roses (4), seared tuna, tuna and salmon sashimi (6), rainbow rolls (6) California rolls (4), tuna and salmon nigiri

I opted for the Green Plate and Warren chose the Blue Plate. It’s A LOT of sushi, but don’t worry… We found place for it. After our meal our lovely waiter convinced us into getting some dessert. He assured me that we would not regret it and so we dutifully agreed. He was right. Along came White Chocolate Beignets, which we were told were deep fried Lindt balls with vanilla bean ice cream and butterscotch sauce. Can I just repeat that one… DEEP FRIED LINDT BALLS. Thank you waiter!

    We’ll be back!
