The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront has lots of restaurants, but not all of them are particularly noteworthy. Belthazar, however, is a refreshing change. Located in the Victoria Wharf, the interior design is super modern sleek with low lights and glass and metal. There is also a romantically lit terrace with Table Bay views for al fresco dining when the weather is nice (book ahead).

Calling itself the “largest wine bar in the world,” the list at Belthazar includes some 600 different fine wines and sought-after rare vintages, as well as around 250 local wines by the glass. The bartenders and servers here double as sommeliers and are really knowledgeable about the wine they serve. My friend and I were impressed when we weren’t up-sold too much when asking for a nice glass of Merlot (they offered a mid-range glass, rather than the most expensive in the house). Beyond wine, Belthazar also has an impressive single malt, whiskey, cognac and brandy list.

From a food perspective, Belthazar is also tasty. The menu, while focusing on steak and South African flavors, is creative and offers options for those not in the mood for red meat (but little for vegetarians). We started with the oysters, which were fresh and delicious. My friend also had an order of biltong (her favorite food group), which she said was just the right mix of chewiness and flavor. For mains, vegetarians are pretty limited to the selection of salads. But those who like seafood have a choice of five different fish options, most served in a lemon butter sauce of some variation. There is also a page of calamari, shellfish and seafood platter choices in a number of flavors that are either grilled or fried. For meat you can choose from traditional steaks or game meat, including ostrich and crocodile and the “game of the day.”

What a gorgeous restaurant. Situated in the heart of the V&A Waterfront it offers the most beautiful view of the harbour and table mountain. I’ll be honest, I definitely found it to be very expensive, however it is definitely worth it because it ticks all the boxes in terms of food and location. They also offer one of the biggest wine selections in Cape Town, which suits me just fine!

We enjoyed a glass of the Coastal Place in the Sun as well as a class of the Stellenbosch House Merlot, both very good wines. I found the other wines to be far too expensive, however there is definitely a big selection for people of all wine experiences. We were brought a free bread roll with a sausage and tomato relish dip which was great to have while waiting for our food. The relish was very ‘South African’ which I’m sure all the overseas visitors would love. For the mains we enjoyed a Blue Cheese and Avocado Salad, which included fresh pear, walnuts and mixed baby salad leaves. We then treated ourselves to the Ostrich Fillet with sweet potato fries and some banting cauli-mash. Absolutely delicious! We were quite keen to try the Crocodile Fillet but it was unfortunately not available, however it does say clearly on the menu that they don’t always have it.

The whole experience was positive. It’s a beautiful restaurant to enjoy all that Cape Town has on offer. Certainly very pricey but worth it. We had a great waiter, the food was excellent, the view is incredible and the whole vibe is very uplifting. I would definitely go again.

From family-friendly burger joints to fine-dining restaurants with a celebrity chef’s name emblazoned above the door, there is no shortage of places to eat at the ever-popular V&A Waterfront. And that is, perhaps, part of the problem: too many choices, too many chances for a bad experience. So, my advice? Go to Belthazar.

With its deep wooden bar, starched white tablecloths and crystal wine glasses it’s a distinctly upmarket experience yet remains a few notches below fine dining. It has the stylish yet lived-in feel of a New York steakhouse, but with sea views – and seafood menu – to match its waterfront setting where tables spill out onto a wide terrace.

Seafood options range from fresh line fish to local lobster, but honestly, it’s the steaks you should be looking at. Fillet, rump, sirloin and T-bones can be ordered in portions to suit your appetite, while the daily selection of game meats will surely tempt the curious tourist. The spare ribs and mixed grill kebabs are also house specialities.

All of which go rather nicely with a glass of red wine, and Belthazar has one of the best wine lists in the city. Even more impressive is their selection of wines by the glass: around 250 at last count, so there’ll be no more fights over a big Cabernet versus a floral Merlot.

If there’s a downside, it’s that there’s little on offer for vegetarians besides the salads, and the prices for both food and wine aren’t shy. But then, that’s fairly standard for the tourist-oriented waterfront. However, if you’re going to soak up the buzz of this world-class shopping and entertainment precinct on the fringes of Cape Town harbour then there are few better places to spend your holiday cash than Belthazar.
