Possibly the brightest place in Long Street, or in Cape Town for that matter. The outside walls are painted in bright yellow making it impossible to miss.
The first time I had heard of this place was when my husband was looking for a place to throw a Bachelors Party for one of his best friends. After some research on the internet he came across the Beerhouse on Long and thought it sounded perfect. It was. He loved it so much that I decided I had to give it a try, even though beer has never really been my thing.
I have to say, I loved it. The wall behind the bar is lined with 99 bottles of beer, so it’s literally 99 bottles of beer on the wall (I hope you’re singing along). They cater for everyone, and even include quite a few non-alcoholic beers as well as some more ‘girly’ ones. I started off with a girly one, which was pink and delicious. I then moved on to the more serious beers and even tried one of their tasting platters, which is a great way to discover what beers you like and don’t like.
Their food is very complimentary to the beer. We went for the Flammkuchen (crispy beer-bread dough with crème fraiche base) and we chose the Smoked bacon, white onion and gruyere for our first choice and the ham hock, feta cheese & onion marmalade for our second choice. Another favourite that almost everyone around the table chose was the Bitterballen, which are basically deep fried bread crumbed balls of slow cooked beef ragout, served with hot mustard.
I loved it here. I wonder how many people are attempting to try all 99 beers?!
