Located in the heart of Newlands, Barristers is situated in Cardiff Castle, adding a wonderful Old English atmosphere to the restaurant and that’s not all they have to offer! From the hip outside seating area to the more intimate inside dining area and separate bar, Barristers is a great place to enjoy on any occasion. They offer a great Pub Lunch Special for just R50 and have a wide variety of wines, craft beers and drafts to sample. Their slogan is “Good Food. Great Wine. Warm Friends” and that’s exactly the vibe you get here!

For starters, I enjoyed the Deep Fried Camembert served with cranberry sauce and beer & balsamic caramelized onions. The menu stated that the starter was accompanied by Barristers’ home-made bread, but unfortunately I wasn’t served any and was a little disappointed. The half-round of Camembert had a subtle flavour that went perfectly with the strong flavours of the cranberry and caramelised onion. Very tasty indeed!

For mains, I ordered the Gourmet Burger which you can get in chicken or beef. It comes with bacon, guacamole and feta cheese and is something you are just dying to order when you read their menu. When my burger arrived I couldn’t wait to tuck in as it looked amazing! It also tasted great as the beef was cooked perfectly, juicy and tender. The big portion of chips served alongside was average but still delicious. My favourite part of the main was the soft, salty Danish cheese that made the whole burger. I would highly recommend the Gourmet Burger at Barristers to any burger fanatic!

The service at Barristers is very quick, almost too quick to enjoy yourself. There’s a great hustle and bustle of restaurant staff whizzing by you on a busy night and unfortunately I didn’t feel very relaxed at all. But all in all, I would definitely return for the great food and wine, maybe I’ll try sitting in the more relaxed bar area next time.

Some days you just crave a good steak. This was one such day. My friends and I were looking for a place to go to get our carnivore on and we happened upon Barristers Restaurant in the leafy suburb of Newlands. It’s exactly as a steak place should be and certainly not a place that worries about airs and graces. It’s good ol’, down to earth, good fashioned pub grill. The atmosphere is lively, the beers and wines are flowing and the talk is loud. I’m not sure if it would be my first choice for a romantic meal, but for a group of friends looking for a great night and a good laugh then this was the right choice.

A good choice of wine, of which we chose the Splattered Toad (purely for the awesomeness of the name of course), and the waitress made sure our glasses were never empty.

Despite a solid menu choice of salads, seafood, chicken, pasta, vegetarian etc., it was a no brainer as we all turned straight to the steak page. After all, it’s what they are known for. I chose the 200g fillet steak which came with a rather big portion of butternut and creamed spinach on the side. My other girlfriend went for the same. The boys, on the other hand, went for The Original Barristers Steak. This steak is topped with sautéed mushrooms, crispy bacon bits, garlic, black pepper, red wine and cream. We all left full and happy.

They are open every day from 11am until late, on Saturdays from 9am until late and on Sundays 11am until late. Also every day they serve a pub lunch special from 12pm until 6pm for only R45.

To be honest, just writing this review is making me want to go back.
