A favorite with Stellenbosch locals, 5 Ryneveld is a charming and quirky restaurant that doesn’t quite live up to its potential. The restaurant, which occupies an old Victorian house in the heart of historical Stellenbosch, has a bohemian character that works well in a town filled with galleries and students. Pop art graces the walls, old books line the bookshelves, and odd items – such as an antiquated typewriter and a miniature wicker high-chair – are placed strategically around the house.

Diners spread out across the dining room, study, lounge, library and bedroom, giving the restaurant an intimate feel despite its considerable size. Also of considerable size is the menu, and this is where the restaurant loses its way a little.

There doesn’t appear to be any clear vision to the menu – starters include nachos and chili poppers, Cajun-style Southern fried chicken strips, a cheese and biscuit platter, and soup of the day. For mains, you can choose from wraps, pitas, or pancakes, gourmet burgers, salads and steaks. With so many options to choose from, the menu is rather overwhelming. Furthermore, it doesn’t in any way enhance the character of the restaurant. The décor creates a very specific identity for the restaurant, but the menu falls into the trap of trying to be everything and please everyone.

The ambiance, rather than the food, is what will draw you back to this restaurant. While not bad, it is the type of fare that you’ll find in a restaurant located in a shopping mall. The spread of the diners across the house means that the service is occasionally tardy, but the chatty waiters and the fact that you don’t have to wait long for your food make up for this.

Insider’s tip: 5 Ryneveld screens classic movies on Monday and Thursday evenings.  The movies start at 8pm and R25 gets you in. Dinner-and-a-movie has never been easier.
