I’m always on the lookout for cute coffee shops in Joburg, and this cute little one in the heart of the trendy 4th Avenue strip completely fits the bill. It is an idyllic little spot to people watch while enjoying a latte, pastry or sandwich.

The venue consists of a tiny coffee “kiosk” up front and a slightly larger café behind, separated by a cute tree-shaded patio that sits slightly below street level. The kiosk is perfect for grabbing a quick Americano, Vero or other speciality coffee, or a bag of ground coffee to have at home. The café behind features homemade countertops, art-lined walls, and some seating, but on a nice day you really want to be on the outdoor patio. (There are only four or five tables, so grab one when you can!)

In addition to coffees and other hot and cold beverages, they have a simple food menu which consists of both breakfast and lunch items. Cinnamon French toast, scrambled eggs with spicy tomatoes, Nutella-drenched crumpets, toasties and scrambles are among the fresh, inventive offerings.

I really wanted to try the puff pastry with salmon and creme fraiche – the daily special – but alas, they were out. So instead I had a toasty with all the fixings: bacon, cheese, and chillies. It was gooey and tasty, but came with a slightly unsatisfying side of potato chips that could have fit in a thimble.

The hot chocolate more than made up for it though – it was served in a ginormous glass and was topped with extra-large marshmallows. Almost a meal unto itself.

These service was a little erratic – two different waiters were helping us for some reason, and they seemed to cross wires once in a while, but overall 4th Avenue Coffee Roasters was a great little spot in a great location.
