In the leafy Hillside suburb east of the city center, this darling guesthouse is an affordable retreat that feels like staying in someone’s carefully decorated home. With a designer selfcatering kitchen and lounge, lovely garden area and a swimming pool all for guests’ use, it has more of a chilledout backpacker vibe than the larger hotels in town, and is an excellent choice if you’re looking to strike up a conversation with other global road warriors. Each room here is slightly different, and not all are created equal. The ones that have been renovated are the nicest, and come with lovely polished pale wood floors, African art on warmhued walls and modern bathrooms with shiny stainless steel fixtures and good water pressure in the showers. Some of the standard rooms can feel a bit barren and small, but linens are crisp and cleanliness abounds throughout.
Credit cards are not accepted – if you want to book in advance the property will ask you pay a deposit via bank transfer. This can be cumbersome, so it may be easier to just show up. The location also makes staying without a car prohibitive. On the plus side, this is one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Bulawayo, and there are a number of Western style restaurants just a short drive from the property. Also, if you aren’t a breakfast eater, this is one of the few hotels in Zimbabwe where you pay for the room only.
