If it’s good enough for Obama it’s good enough for you, right?

Sure, you might not get the bullet-proof glass and aircraft carrier stationed offshore as Obama did when he stayed here with Michelle, Malia and Sasha in mid-2013, but this sizeable hotel in the heart of the popular V&A Waterfront remains a great option for tourists that enjoy the central location and sense of security that comes with a waterfront hotel.

Opened in 1997 by former South African president Nelson Mandela, this 329-room hotel is part of the massive Sun International group, and is also a member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World association.

All of which means that it more than lives up to its five-star rating, although the large size does lend a slightly impersonal feel at times. If you can overlook that you’ll no doubt enjoy the facilities that come standard with a large resort-style property: the array of room and suite categories including those equipped for disabled travellers, the pool-deck with harbour and mountain views, the decadent English-style High Tea in the lounge, the spa and wellness centre, the direct access to the sprawling shopping mall… the list goes on.

There are a handful of restaurants on site, but with the cornucopia of eating options just a few steps away in the main V&A Waterfront you’ll likely find better food – and value – by exploring a little.

It’s about the only niggle though, so if you don’t mind the imposing size The Table Bay Hotel is a centrally-located option that ticks all the right boxes when it comes to a luxury city stay. No wonder Obama left smiling…
