This old-style boutique hotel offers numerous charming touches, superb service, and an excellent location along Florida Road in Durban’s Berea neighbourhood.

When I arrived I was pleasantly surprised to get a real room key — I mean a real metal key, not a plastic card. The room I stayed in was tastefully decorated and had all the basic features, from a bath/shower to a TV, bed and plenty of space for your clothing. The room also features a coffee/ ea station. The rooms are quiet, and outside noise is minimal, despite being on a busy street. WiFi is free, which is sadly not the case at all hotels.

Around the hotel are plenty of nooks and crannies with tables and chairs where you can just sit and chill and watch the sun go down. They also have a great lounge with comfortable chairs where you can read at your leisure while tucking into the complimentary wine, cheese and biscuits. Breakfast, which is hot or continental, is served in a light, airy room which looks over the pool area.

The hotel’s location on Florida Road is ideal for foodies, as there are at least 30 restaurants within walking distance. This hotel is also on the bus route, which means easy access to the beach and other districts in Durban.

One of the Benjamin’s best assets is its friendly and knowledgeable staff. They really pay attention to detail: for example, the manager on duty remembers you when you collect your key. I really felt like I was part of one big happy family when I stayed here.
