If you need a few nice nights at the Montecasino Resort without breaking the bank, look no further than the SunSquare Montecasino. When you pull up, you’ll immediately be impressed by the Italian villa style architecture and ready for a fantastic stay. However, the inside isn’t quite as luxurious, and you’ll get what you expect for budget, business accommodations.
The lobby is rather small yet clean, with a small check in desk and a few colorful modern lamps hanging from the ceiling and blocking off the well-stocked bar. The outside door leads directly to several restaurant and the large MonteCasino square for easy access to anything you might need. We were checked in quickly by the friendly concierge and a porter was more than helpful taking the bags up to our room.
Rooms at the SunSquare are somewhat minimal and small, though the layout gets the layout of furnishings out of the space. This was at least the case in the room that I stayed in. It’s clean and modern, but you won’t find much in terms of fancy or decorative decor on the walls. There are a few nice touches though, including a red vase and a matching red “lips” phone which is a throwback to the 1980s, with the attached spiral cord and all.
You don’t exactly have a separate bathroom, as it just merges into the bedroom, with a closed off tinted toilet room on the left and a glass shower on the right. While the shower is closed off, from the room, you can definitely see in if you are bothered by that in the smaller bedrooms. The toiletries are also somewhat basic but get the job done. There isn’t a separate shampoo and soap, instead you just get one bottle to wash your hair and body.
For getting down to business, there is an ample sized table, and the WiFi service through AlwaysOn is the fastest that I experienced at any hotel in Johannesburg, just be sure not to go through too much of the data, as you’ll be charged after 500Mb. It’s also limited to one device, something to be aware of if you carry a laptop, tablet and phone and need to use the WiFi on all of them. Topping up runs about 10 rand per 100mb, depending on the package you choose.
Probably the best part of the hotel is the restaurant, which has delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner. The spread at breakfast is well beyond what you might expect at a hotel of this size, with an omelette bar, large selection of meat and fruit, and English and South African staples like beans and pap. You can tell by the offerings that they are used to quite a few business travelers coming through, and most of the people dining there were suited up.
Overall, the SunSquare is functional, clean, budget-friendly and is as convenient as it gets if you plan to spend most of your time at MonteCasino while in Johannesburg.
