Stanford, a charming country town in the Overberg only two hours’ drive from Cape Town, has a wealth of lovely accommodation options, from self-catering cottages and lodges to intimate B&Bs. Out of all of them, Stanford River Lodge is a firm favorite.

Set just outside of town on a large private stretch of manicured riverside lawn, the lodge is owned by a friendly couple who go out of their way to make your stay memorable, from giving you suggestions on what to do and booking tables at their favorite restaurants, to taking you to the beach in their 4×4. Stanford River Lodge is wonderfully intimate and quiet, with just five en suite cosy rooms and two self-catering cottages named after local birds, all with big glass doors that open out onto the garden and overlook the river beyond. Honeymooning couples usually stay in the Fish Eagle suite, which is on the upper floor of the building and has the best views of the river, as well as a romantic freestanding bath.

With a fantastic location right on the tranquil Klein River, the lodge offers swimming and canoeing. Don’t miss a chance to head out on one of the lodge’s canoes for a paddle: if you’re lucky you’ll see some otters! If you’re keen on birding, there’s a bird sanctuary a short paddle away at a lagoon estuary, where there are 100 species to try and spot. Also close to the lodge are deserted beautiful beaches where you can do whale watching, as well as great mountain biking routes and hiking trails. After you’ve had your nature fix, refuel at Stanford’s excellent restaurants, wine farms, cheese farm and a microbrewery – all just a short drive away.
