The Southern Sun Cullinan in Cape Town has 394 rooms and 18 of them are suites. If you are lucky enough to get a suite, it means pampering and special treatment.

My suite came with its own butler, aka suite host. “Anything you need, you communicate with me,” he told me, and he handed me a business card.

It was difficult to imagine needing anything in this luxurious place that made me wish it was my home. My suite had two bathrooms, a living room with a bar, a bonsai on the dining room table and incense on the coffee table. There was free water and a bottle of South African wine on the dining room table. But the sweetest thing was free bubble bath treatments such as rooibos mineral bath salts with rose petals or lemon bath crystals.

    That’s not all.

I had my own in-room pillow menu. I could order a hypo-allergenic pillow or a buckwheat pillow if I was a side sleeper. For on-back sleepers, there’s the Swedish memory pillow or a neck pillow in case I simply wanted my back to be well aligned in the morning, assuming, of course, these pillows work. I settled for what was on the bed and had an amazing night’s sleep.

From my room on the 10th floor, I could see the Cape Town stadium of 2010 World Cup fame, and Robben Island beyond.

This hotel sees a lot of business travelers — what you’d expect considering it’s located opposite the Cape Town International Convention Center, which has capacity for 10,000 conferees.

But it also has its own conference facilities with a capacity for 300 people in seven conference rooms.

The hotel has the added benefit of being a 10-to-15 minute walk or a shuttle ride away from Africa’s number one attraction, the Victoria & Alfred waterfront. The hotel’s leisure market is quite small, an administrator told me. But in their down time, guests want to go shopping and eat at the V & A Waterfront. The hotel shuttles them there every hour for free.

The 13-year-old Cullinan is in the process of upgrading to include a spa, but for now, guests can use the spa at the Southern Sun Waterfront hotel located right next door, or order an in-room massage.

My breakfast at the hotel’s Peach Tree Restaurant was one of the best buffets I encountered in South Africa — and they were all good. I hated to leave this place.
