Dusty bush roads wind through Shamwari Private Game Reserve in South Africa’s Eastern Cape until they approach a restored homestead in the reserve’s southern half. The fully fenced property contains nine comfortable and cozy suites, seven of which adjoin for larger parties. Each spacious room is equipped with a television, a lounge area, and a private porch that looks out onto manicured gardens and the plains beyond. The gated infinity pool and nearby jungle gym prove to be wonderful spots for relaxation and game viewing between drives and fantastic meals.

As a fully fenced property in a malaria-free region, Riverdene excels in catering to families. A permanent child coordinator welcomes children into the bush with a safari-themed gift. Activities are then organized that both include and exclude parents, providing the perfect combination of independence and togetherness for a traveling family. Scrapbooking, cultural activities, and visits to the unique conservation center visits keep children enthralled as parents explore the magic of this exclusive wilderness on full safaris. Shortened drives in covered safari vehicles are also organized for those traveling with adventurous children over the age of four. In the evenings, talented chefs prepare a menu that gives young and old a taste of South African cuisine adjusted to international palates.

Shamwari itself looks markedly different from the private game reserves surrounding the famed Kruger National Park. Lush jungles line the slopes of rolling hills, which eventually give way onto expansive ungulate-filled grassy plains. The region itself has been restored to its former glory through thirty years of intensive conservation, transforming farmland into a magnificent Big Five game reserve. Malaria-free, exclusive, intimate and great economic-value, Riverdene Lodge should be of particular appeal to intrepid families.
