There probably isn’t a more conveniently located hotel in Johannesburg for business travel than the 216-room Radisson Blu Gautrain. Set in the heart of Sandton, the city’s financial district, the hotel is directly opposite the Gautrain station, from where you can catch trains to OR Tambo International Airport, the CBD to Pretoria, and it’s just a short walk from Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square, two of Joburg’s best shopping malls.
Despite being entirely corporate-orientated, the hotel manages to be rather cool and contemporary, with urban-chic minimalist furniture, abstract art and lots of black white and grey with splashes of acid yellow. The public spaces are designed for business meetings – and they’re happening everywhere, from the cocoon-like chairs and couch booths in the lobby, which features floor-to-ceiling glass windows looking out onto the Sandton bustle and the tables set on the sunny deck outside around the pool, to the stylish Central One Bar and Restaurant, which offers snacks and a compact but creative main menu (think smoked salmon, compressed cucumber and horseradish mousse with almond ciabatta crumble and beetroot sponge). Just about the only place meetings aren’t happening is the well-equipped top floor gym.
Bedrooms are on the small side but well-designed so they don’t feel cramped, and have luxury touches like perfect pillows and rain showers. The only thing to note is that the bathroom is separated from the bedroom with a glass wall and no curtain – not ideal if you’re sharing a room with a colleague. Double-glazed windows make for a good night’s sleep – even though you’re surrounded by busy roads, you can hardly hear the traffic. (Tip: If you want a room with a great view over Sandton, ask for one on an upper level ending in 02).
Service is efficient and professional, while being a bit on the impersonal side, but it’s a small gripe compared with the overall sophisticated and polished experience of staying in a hotel that is so well suited to business travellers.
