The Protea Hotel Franschhoek is conveniently located just off the main road of Franschhoek. This means that award-winning restaurants and an array of boutique stores are within walking distance. It also means that you are just down the road from the starting point for the Franschhoek Wine Tram, a hop-on hop-off tour that stops at some of South Africa’s oldest and most established wine estates.

It’s just as well that there is so much to do in Franschhoek, because the rooms at the hotel are not the sort of rooms that you’ll be inclined to spend excessive amounts of time in. Although the room I stayed in was clean enough and contained all the amenities that you would expect of a hotel in this price range, it was badly in need of refurbishment. The carpet was stained, the chairs looked like they belonged in a doctor’s waiting room, the art like it belonged in an old-age home, and the vast majority of the furniture had been drowned in salmon-colored paint. In addition to this, the bath water, which took a good few minutes to heat up, was inexplicably tinted brown – when I enquired, confused looks were followed by mumblings about heavy rains.

The rooms of the hotel are positioned around a courtyard, which contains a large swimming pool and relaxation area. This means that the rooms have pleasant views of the pool area; however, it also means that unless you keep the net curtains drawn, everyone can see into your room.

In addition to the pool area, the hotel also has a restaurant, a bar – with leather couches and a fireplace for winter and a terrace for summer – and conference facilities that can accommodate up to 120 people. There is a small work station in the lobby that guests are free to use and complimentary WiFi (500MB per guest per day).

It is a little bit tricky to judge value because the price you pay for a room depends very much on how you go about reserving it. The hotel advertises daily specials on the board outside the hotel, which, depending on vacancy, can be as little as half the price you’ll pay if you book online. For the amount you’ll pay for an online reservation – roughly $120 in the low season – you’ll get far better value somewhere else. But, at $60 – the price on the board outside on the night I stayed at the hotel – it’s not bad.
