Unlike some of the “sunnier” hotels on Marine Parade, the Protea Edward is more darkly elegant, like many others in the Protea chain. And unlike most of the other beachfront hotels, which are either Art Deco or modern, this one is more Victorian in its architecture and decor.
The lobby has a posh, decadent vibe, with green marble floors, crystal chandeliers and dark wood fixtures. This aesthetic extends to all 101 of the rooms, which have green carpets, the same dark wood furniture, plush drapes and velvety bed coverings. Though my room was a bit on the small side, it was supremely comfortable and had massive closet space, plus a tiny beach-facing balcony. Perks included a coffee maker, mini-bar (stocked on request), full-size work desk, and a sleek, immaculately tiled bathroom.
The wi-fi was slow-ish, but if you’re a business traveler and need to get work done fast, there is a business center on the ground floor. The hotel actually caters significantly to business travelers and those hosting functions, and has a number of swank banquet and meeting rooms.
Elsewhere in the hotel you’ll find the elegant restaurant, which offers buffet breakfasts plus a a carte lunches and dinners. Both meals I had there were very well-presented and the food was prepared to a high standard. On the top floor is a rooftop pool which does not offer much deck space, but the area is stylish and the views will knock you out.
Of course the Protea’s location is superb – directly opposite the promenade, beach and roads to uShaka Marine World, the convention center and Moses Mabhida stadium.
