Prana, a Hindu word for a “life force that flows in and out of the body,” is a very apt name for this fabulous lodge tucked into the trees and shrubs and alongside the spectacular Chintsa beach, surrounded by beautiful lush Eastern Cape vegetation and the odd herd of cattle.

This five-star, small-scale luxury hotel is everything you want from an escape from it all, in perfect surrounds. Each of the seven suites is more of a mini-house, with small but welcome plunge pools, palatial sized bathtubs, double beds filled to the brim with comfortable bedding and cushions, and a lounge area perfect for relaxing. Each suite is individually decorated with flair and a sense of luxury, from the myriad Persian carpets, to the beautiful outdoor showers. This theme is carried through all the communal spaces of the lodge. The giant fire by the outside dining and bar area is a welcome sight for winter days.

The staff are a perfect combination of attentive and unobtrusive, making sure you have everything to make your stay perfect. And I mean this in every sense. Special occasion and you need a birthday cake? In-room dining by candlelight for that romantic dinner for two, or a private beach picnic overlooking the ocean? It is never to much trouble. They have everything covered here and it is done with subtle elegance.

The onsite spa is a must visit, tranquil and serene with some fantastic massages on offer. Food prepared by the chef is also of a very high standard, with mouthwatering soups and desserts that you will need to leave space for, as you do not want to miss them. The beach access from the lodge is rather steep, but great for those who value their fitness. There is, however, respite for those who come for a leisurely stroll, as there is kinder sloping access via the hotel next door, which is easily accessible from the lodge.

Located just 40 minutes outside of East London, Prana Lodge is your own private haven. Just be careful how long you stay — you might never want to leave.
