The Park Inn is a mid-range hotel without frills, but with plenty of value for money – and style. Its décor is fresh and urban (although its hallways are pretty dark) and a stay at this hotel is uncomplicated. The most outstanding thing about Park Inn is the level of service – one would expect that because it’s not a high-end hotel that service would be less than stellar, but the converse is true. The hotel staff – from the barman to the reception desk – will bend over backwards to help you, with even the most mundane of request (I simply asked where breakfast would be served the following morning, and a staff member by the name of Sam practically gave me a tour of the kitchen).
The Park Inn is a member of the Radisson Blu group, and its Sandton hotel has 273 rooms. Smokers will be happy to know that a choice of smoking/non-smoking floors are available (which means that they can indulge their vice in their room). The double rooms are a little on the cramped side (as is the bed), and mine did not have a bath – instead it had to ‘cubicles’: one for a shower, and one for the toilet. The rooms offer the usual: a flatscreen TV, coffee/tea station/ mini-bar (on request). A superior room upgrade is available (R250 / 23 USD), which gives guests a Super Buffet Breakfast, premium Wi-Fi access, a bathrobe and slippers, and a choice of free starter, drink or dessert. Room service is reasonably priced (until 11pm), and a continental breakfast in bed is R85 (8 USD).
The hotel is located in the middle of the Sandton CBD: it’s close to Sandton City shopping centre, Nelson Mandela Square, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, and the Sandton Convention Centre. O.R.Tambo International Airport is 15 minutes away on the nearby Gautrain.
The hotel’s restaurant, called the RBG Grill, has a large terrace and is spacious. It has an all-day menu with gourmet burgers and the like. Its attached bar is swanky and stylish and was buzzing when I ordered a drink. An interesting addition to the hotel is its unisex public toilets (an unusual sight in South Africa). The hotel has limited facilities, namely a basic fitness room (cardio and weights), conference and meeting facilities, and a business centre on Level 1. Parking is free.
