The first year or two were rocky as this huge “urban resort” found its feet, but today the One&Only is firmly cemented as one of the finest hotels in Cape Town, home to visiting celebrities and glammed-up locals alike.

With 131 rooms this is no small property, but as they’re well spread out there’s a corner for everyone. The seven-story Marina Rise rooms offer wonderful Table Mountain and harbour views, while the Island rooms and suites are more intimate, set amid waterways and landscaped gardens. The décor throughout is luxurious, with a gentle African touch to the international quality of the fittings and furnishings.

Rooms aside, it’s the wealth of leisure offerings that really sets the One&Only apart. The 1000 sq m spa has 10 treatment rooms alongside vitality pools, sauna and steam facilities. The spa also offers the lauded Bastien Gonzalez Pedi:Mani:Cure treatments; a huge hit with locals. Steps from the spa, the enormous infinity pool is heated to ward off any chilly days, while a supervised Kids’ and Teen facility offers further activities to keep younger travellers entertained.

While the rooms and spa treatments keep the hotel busy in summer, it’s the top-notch dining that keeps locals coming back throughout the year. The hotel is home to the only Nobu outlet in Africa, dishing up a localised version of his famous Peruvian-Japanese cuisine. The hotel is also home to a restaurant by local celebrity chef Reuben Riffel, and although the cavernous space is a little soulless, there’s a solid menu of globe-trotting bistro cuisine on offer. On sunny days, Isola’s relaxed Mediterranean menu served poolside is a hit, while at sunset the Vista Bar offers beautiful views of Table Mountain and the city.

Lastly, the One&Only ticks that all-important final box: location. Situated a few minutes’ walk from the V&A Waterfront precinct, it’s hard to imagine a more perfect location for a hotel stay in Cape, particularly for first-time visitors.
