Situated on the edge of the Hermanus Lagoon overlooking a dramatic backdrop of the Olifantsberg mountains in the Overberg, Mosaic Lagoon Lodge is a luxurious but low-key getaway with a peaceful natural setting close to the ocean, intimate atmosphere and superb, incredibly attentive staff who make you feel like you’re part of the family.
The lodge, which features contemporary minimalist African-inspired décor but still feels cozy and unstuffy, is built under gnarled milkwood trees on wooden walkways, and the four suites are spread out from one another. Each room features its own private deck with magnificent views (for the most secluded spot, book the Kingfisher room), a mosquito net-draped bed, a massive bathtub and a romantic outdoor shower. The best thing about the room is being able to lie in bed and look out across the lagoon at the mountains.
There’s lots to do to fill your days at Mosaic. Friendly guides will help you plan your days and take you out on activities, which include driving 4×4 quad bikes on sandy tracks through miles of fynbos, going kayaking and boating on the calm waters of the lagoon, going mountain biking on beautiful trails, 4×4-ing to the pristine and incredibly scenic Walker Bay beach, and going to visit the caves at nearby De Kelders. The lodge will also arrange activities in the surrounding area – everything from shark cage diving to wine tasting. Downtime comes in the form of dips in the small swimming pool, book reading on the loungers, and massages at the spa.
All meals and some drinks are included in the room rate, and you never go very long without eating or drinking something delicious: indulgent breakfasts, bubbly on boat rides, wine and snacks on beach trips, cocktails ready for you when you arrive back from an excursion, and fabulous three-course dinners accompanied by bottles of wine from local wineries. Mosaic is definitely the kind of place that you should avoid if you’re on a diet!
