Recently revamped, Linkwasha Camp sits in its own private concession way out in the far southeastern corner of the enormous Hwange National Park. There are only nine tents here, all of which are long, low-slung affairs built on raised wooden platforms and with (pumped) waterhole views. The pastel tinged tents are very well-spaced which gives for an air of wonderful solitude and each room (calling them tents is a bit of a misnomer as the only canvas is essentially the roof) has floor to ceiling mesh windows, some of the most impressive bathrooms going and a lounge area with sofas and reading material.

The common areas are defined by what appears to be acres of decked terrace and a gorgeous, long, thin swimming pool perfect for a few après-safari laps. The whole package is one of fresh, open and contemporary design quite different from the average safari lodge and the food, as with all Wilderness Safaris lodges, is in a class above most competitors (just wait till you try the banana and bacon tapas!).

Hwange itself is a very busy and popular park – with animals – there are literally thousands of elephants and buffalo here at certain times of year as well as masses of predators. Human visitors though are a much rarer breed and even where the park gets close to tourist honeypots like Victoria Falls, safari vehicles are considerably rarer here than in most of Africa’s big name protected areas. In the area of the park where Linkwasha Camp is located you actually have a very good chance of having the entire place to yourself (we did!).

Hwange is also a park in which walking safaris are allowed, and Linkwasha has top-notch walking guides who’ll happily reveal a side of the bush to you that you’ll miss if you spend all your time in a vehicle.
