I loved the warm welcome I got when I checked in at Hotel Tivoli, located in a busy area
of high-rise buildings on Polana Cimento B, Maputo.
The front desk staff said they were happy to have me as a guest and they upgraded my room
to show they meant it, which was greatly appreciated.
My room was fresh, clean, and surprisingly spacious with a great view of the street, which was very quiet the day I stayed there due to a national holiday. It had beautiful hardwood floors and not one but two flat-screen TVs so I could watch from the chaise or the bed. The bed was inviting with white linen. It felt luxurious and was great value for the money.
My desk was large and comfortable to work at, and I had Internet access at all times.
During my stay, Mozambique celebrated Peace Day so I got to watch a parade of floats from
my hotel room.
The hotel showed at every turn that it was making good on its stated commitment to
conserve energy and go green.
Lights had sensors in the hallways and common areas and they lit up only when I got close to
them. They turned off automatically once I passed.
I asked for laundry service and staff arrived almost instantly to pick up my clothes. My
clothes came back a few hours later pressed and pristine. I’m still getting over the price
tag though. Warning: do the math before you order this service. Their laundry rates were not out of line with other Maputo hotels. I’m just saying laundry can set you back a third of the cost of a night’s stay, or more.
Like many Maputo hotels I stayed in, Tivoli was being renovated to add to its existing
conference capacity and 88-rooms.
Conference rooms at Hotel Tivoli are named for the different provinces in Maputo.
The hotel bar was under construction. I enjoyed breakfast in the hotel restaurant where I got to hear some fellow English speakers from Malawi who were in Mozambique to monitor the soon-to-be-held elections.
I’d go back to this hotel in a heartbeat.
Tivoli is owned by the Portugal-based TD Hotels, parent of Avenida Hotel in Maputo and a second Tivoli hotel in Beira.
