The Holiday Inn’s location atop the new Ridgeside development in Umhlanga Ridge, is perhaps its best asset. Featuring panoramic views of the Indian Ocean from Umhlanga to Durban, you get to marvel at the wonderful coastline as you arrive — and if you have a sea-facing room like I did, you’re greeted in the morning by a beautiful ocean sunrise.

I had a basic standard room, which was far more than adequate. The bed was so comfortable I actually drifted off to sleep while watching TV. I really appreciated the choice of pillows (hard, medium or soft) and the eco-friendly features such as the cardkey-controlled lights (your cardkey also controls the hotel lifts) and the guest-controlled heating fans, which are aspects of the “Green Engage” program that the hotel partakes in. Wi-Fi speed was good and I got 100mb per device daily. The reception staff also phone to check if the room is to your satisfaction — a nice touch.

The only drawbacks are that cupboard space is minimal – so don’t bring loads of clothing – and the bathroom is smallish, but it has all that you need (and a good shower).

I recommend the onsite restaurant, Butcher Block, which, as its name suggests, offers steaks and other grill items — while treating diners to gorgeous ocean views. Breakfast is served in the maritime-themed Great Room and features a wide variety of choices, from continental to standard buffet-style fare.

If you don’t feel like dining in, there are numerous restaurants in the nearby Gateway mega-mall. Other easily-accessible attractions include Umhlanga Rocks and the beaches, and Sibaya Casino. There are some meeting rooms available if you’re staying in the hotel for business, and the hotel’s not far from local firms such as Alexander Forbes and Deloitte. The Holiday Inn Express is a good choice for leisure or business travelers on a budget. Overall this no-frills but clean and efficient hotel offers good service and good value for money.
