There’s a retro vibe at the Girassol Indy Congress Hotel and Spa that I found charming.
A sprawling complex of conference, hotel, leisure and residential facilities, this hotel
is located in the upscale Sommerschield neighborhood, where houses can fetch $1 million
and up.
Meticulously landscaped with mature shrubs and flowering trees, the hotel grounds make for a pleasant stroll along shady trails between hotel rooms. Golf carts are the only vehicles allowed beyond the guarded gate.
My room was clean but looked like it could use an overhaul. It was roomy for a standard
size, and eventually I managed to figure out how to work the shower. I had to move the
small desk around to find an outlet close enough for my power cords to reach.
Internet was fast but I paid for all of it. This hotel skips the usual free intro Wi-Fi
session offered at most large hotels in Maputo in South Africa.
Hotel staff was quick and responsive to questions, and sent a golf cart to pick up my luggage
at a moment’s notice.
I enjoyed an aerobics class and it was free for guests in the large hotel gym, which
doubles as a spa. There are several rooms full of workout equipment and group workouts
throughout the day such as cardio, kickboxing and spin.
In the spa, you can get facials, massages, saunas, a Turkish bath or just relax.
There’s also a restaurant in the gym where you can buy bread, sweet rolls and juices.
The gym also has a huge children’s room and a playground where moms can leave young
ones when they’re working out or at the spa.
In addition to 72 hotel rooms, the hotel known by locals as Indy Village has 55 one-to-
three bedroom villas where guests can stay for a month, a year or more. Some have lived
there for years, the reception staff told me.
The hotel’s impressive conference center can handle 1000 people for banquets, cocktail
parties, fashion shows and classes.
There are two hotel pools, each with a bar, and both landscaped with lots of flowering
frangipani, hibiscus and bougainvillea.
My breakfast was included in my room rate at Forno do Indy, the hotel restaurant which has a
wood-fired oven. Breakfast included a full hot and cold buffet with delicious scrambled
eggs, custard pastries, rolls, fresh fruit, coffee and much more.
I’d gladly return to this peaceful setting.
