It was painted in exactly the color I expected. ‘Essenwood House’ sounded posh and salmon pink. It was both. But a kind of old-colonial, good-natured and welcoming posh.

The 5-star guesthouse in an established neighborhood (think large trees and other posh old houses) in Durban is set in a magnificent garden with tremendous views over Durban and out to the ocean. Located in a small panhandle alleyway, it is away from street noise with mature trees in the garden, house many birds and monkeys, so you are surrounded by the sounds of nature.

Fresh anthurium flowers adorn the house and touches of other exotic-ness (as befitting the tropical, humid Durban) can be found in the house. Bright paintings, a bouquet of wire-and-bead flowers in the lounge and oriental rugs add colorful focal points throughout. Essenwood House is a guesthouse where you will feel fancy and elegant. Although there are some dated items and carpets here and there seem a bit tired, the antique furniture and original art do lend a graceful air to the interior.  Adding to the personality of Essenwood are the two long-haired dachshunds Lucy and Bella. Owner and manager John Chance has been at Essenwood since 1996 and knows the city well. His welcome was warm and tips were helpful.

The guesthouse has six rooms varying in size, from cozy and quiet, to sea-facing with an enormous carpeted bathroom and balcony. Amenities include satellite TV, coffee/tea tray with rusks, air conditioning and well-priced minibar. Breakfast is royal and vast: a cheese platter, fruit salad, crispy fresh croissants and cooked options such as omelets and meats are served tastefully.

There is safe parking and luggage can be stored if you want to explore the city after checking out. Essenwood House is good value for money, and near Florida Road with trendy restaurants and shops. Although not a destination in itself, Essenwood House’s lounge, pool and garden offers a quiet retreat from the heat of the city and if on a business trip in Durban, will justify an extra day’s stay to wind down.
