I don’t know a huge amount about architecture or interior design, but I do know what I like. I’ve always been a fan of sharp, modern décor contrasted against historical buildings. So by default, I’m also a fan of De Kloof Luxury Estate.
It doesn’t take long to work out that owner Marjolein van Mourik-Borrias does know plenty about design and you could easily picture the recently-refurbished rooms in a magazine showcasing stylish interiors. It’s not all about appearances though – these rooms are made for sleeping in, with extra length beds, percale linen, free and fast Wi-Fi, Nespresso machines and heaters/AC units that keep the rooms pleasant year-round, despite Swellendam’s fluctuating climate. The only slight disappointments are the not-quite-fluffy-enough towels and the attached-to-the wall hairdryers, with hold-down buttons which seem more suited to an establishment with a few fewer stars.
More in keeping with the De Kloof’s luxurious feel are the heated super-king-sized waterbeds found in a couple of the suites – most definitely worth a splurge. Away from the rooms, there’s a smart restaurant serving a la carte champagne breakfasts and five-course dinners, a glistening pool and a gaggle of geese wandering the grounds (occasionally taking a dip). There’s also the ultra-luxurious Villa, a brand new addition for those looking for an extended stay in celebrity-worthy accommodation.
Room all have their own seating areas – inside and out – and it’s a beautiful spot to soak up the Overberg atmosphere. De Kloof is set back a little from Swellendam’s town centre, a charming place with some good restaurants, a striking church and an excellent historical museum.
