Yes, you are on the right road. And no, there isn’t anything else up here.

You’re bound to wonder if you’ve taken a wrong turn when you’re heading for Cathedral Peak Hotel in the Drakensberg Mountains. There’s nothing but you, a deserted road and couple of cows.

But keep going, because after a final hairpin bend you reach this lovely mansion sitting in glorious and absolutely splendid isolation. It’s an elegant, rambling old building with spacious bedrooms and the most amazing views.

Once you arrive you won’t need to leave again until your holiday is over, because everything you need is on site, with lots of activities to keep you entertained.

It’s fabulous fun for kids, with daily organised activities including rides behind a tractor and table tennis contests. It’s great for parents too, since kids have their own supervised dining room, and you can enroll them for as many activities as they can handle while you laze by the pool.

There are as many activities as there are mountains to admire, including horse riding, a playground and jumping castle, outdoor pools, a gym, a small spa, a 9-hole golf course, archery, mountain bike trails, badminton and fly fishing. I often just sat on the terrace with a glass of wine and admired the amphitheatre of peaks in front.

Guided walks take place every day, or there’s a gruelling nine-hour hike up Cathedral Peak itself twice weekly. The Drakensberg is Africa’s most important site for Stone Age paintings, with more than 500 sites dating back 2,400 years. I took an easy hike to a waterfall, then my guide led me up a steep path to a cave and pointed out etchings of some ill-fated bushmen fleeing from a hungry lion.

Evening entertainment includes bingo, karaoke and quiz nights, and I was chuffed to win a zip line adventure by solving some riddles one evening.

Dinner and breakfasts are buffet style and included in the rate, and you can buy lunch from the bar menu if you can’t wait until the complimentary afternoon tea.
