From the moment you walk through the doors, the Cape Grace exudes the air of an intimate boutique hotel, despite having 120 rooms. Service is affable but low-key and the décor throughout is stylish and elegant. From the curio-filled glass cases providing artistic eye candy as you walk the lengthy corridors to the wrought iron furniture in the rooms, everything here has been carefully considered.

“Welcome home,” say staff as they open the door to your room, and indeed every effort has been made to make the rooms in equal parts opulent and homely. Bathtubs are huge, linen is luxurious and there is nothing cookie cutter about the accommodation here.

The Cape Grace excels in many areas and none more so than catering for families. Delightful touches include story time in the library, gingerbread men at bedtime, bath toys and baby essentials provided on arrival and an all-important babysitting service. The hotel’s excellent Signal restaurant is child friendly as well, but you might want to take advantage of the babysitters if you care to indulge in a whisky tasting experience at Bascule. The bar boasts an impressive collection of whiskies from around the world and enthusiastic staff run tutored tastings and whisky pairings. Back in Signal, it’s wine that gets the foodie treatment and their five course food and wine paired dinner is highly recommended.

Recover the morning after with the lavish breakfast buffet featuring the likes of smoked salmon and MCC (the local version of champagne), freshly baked pastries, Cape-made cheeses and an interesting selection of a la carte hot breakfasts.

Once you feel able to drag yourself away for a while, the hotel is perfectly positioned at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, a supreme shopping and dining district, and one of Cape Town’s top tourist sights. As soon as you want to venture further, the hotel’s chauffeur service offers complimentary rides within a 10km radius.

If only home was really as divine as this.
