There’s nothing like going for a nice sundowner in Joburg after a long week at work. Oh, who are we kidding — we think it’s fine to get started on a Monday night! Fortunately Joburg is a rather vertical city compared to most places in Africa, and it even has the tallest building on the whole continent. This makes it pretty great for taking an elevator to the top of a building to watch the sunset and have a drink… or three. Here are our picks for the best rooftop bars in Johannesburg.
Randlords
Randlords touts itself as the most exclusive venue in Johannesburg and works it’s magic to live up to the claim. It’s usually used for private parties by business people looking to impress their clients and offers a 360 degree view of the city from the 22nd floor of the South Point Towers. However, they do offer public events throughout the year where locals can join in the fun as well. Of course, the mixologists here are top notch and the chefs deliver some of the best tapas in the city.
Level Four Champagne Bar At 54 On Bath
This bar in Rosebank is one of the poshest in Joburg and features a fantastic selection of champagne. While it isn’t as high up as some of the places on our list, you’re still on the rooftop in an elegant setting that features several dining tables and even a croquet course. The food here is also outstanding and specializes in everything from macarons to expertly prepared filet mignon.
Elevate Rooftop Bar At Reef Hotel
Located in the CBD, this rooftop lounge is one of the most polished in the city and features elegant white decor mixed with sleek glass architecture that offers a 360 degree view of downtown. The venue is available for large and small events and has been heavily frequented by local celebs and musicians.
The Living Room Eco Cafe
While this isn’t a place that is going to be a regular hangout, it’s pretty great when they have an event (or on the weekend) and is one of the quirkiest rooftop bars in the city. The inside is decked out with hammocks and palm trees that accompany the fantastic views of the Maboneng Precinct and downtown Joburg.
The Beach
No, we aren’t talking about going to Durban. While it’s only a few stories up, this outdoor beach themed bar is definitely one of the most eccentric in the city. People in Johannesburg aren’t very close to the beach, but have brought in tons of beach sand, chairs and rainbow colored umbrellas to bring to the beach to them. The venue frequently hosts fun events and is the perfect place to host your own next party.
Skyline Gardens
Located in Braamfontein, this rooftop cocktail bar has some of the best views of downtown where you can see the the city’s icons like the Hillbrow Tower and Nelson Mandela Bridge light up at night. There are lounge chairs and couches scattered around the top, along with several stools facing the glass that look down over the streets. It’s usually reserved for events, but if you get a chance to go up there you definitely should.
The Island Bar At Southern Sun Hyde Park
This bar has one of the best views of the city and you can watch the sun cover the rolling hills and lush trees around you in all directions. Guests can sit outside on the wooden patio in chaise lounges as they bring drink cocktails. If the weather is too hot, just take a dip in the pool or go inside where you can still have fantastic views because of the floor to ceiling windows in all directions. Go for the coconut flavored alcoholic ice cream for a refreshing treat.
San Deck at Sandton Sun
This outdoor bar at the Sandton Sun just might have the best view in Sandton. It features several large fire pits which look gorgeous as you look out over the city at night. There are many regulars that pop in here to catch the view after work (or a long day of shopping in Sandton City).
Skye Bar At Holiday Inn Sandton
Located on the 9th floor of the Holiday Inn in Sandton, this snazzy bar offers a more relaxed place to chill out after work. There are dangling chandeliers throughout the interior along with large plush booths that are perfect for sinking into with a drink in hand.
The Neighbourgoods Market
More known for its gourmet food vendors than its bar, this is still a great place to spend the weekend afternoon. The outdoor bar area usually serves up beer and cocktails while bands setup for music a bit before noon. The small outdoor area gets packed, so make sure you get there early to find a corner or table to hang out by.
