With some 2,500 miles of coastline plus numerous inhabited islands off it, Mozambique is filled with plenty of watery adventures. It’s also less crowded than neighboring South Africa, making it a more off the beaten path place to have an epic time. Here are 15 adventures to have along the Mozambique coastline.
1. Fly to Medjumbe Private Island
Just landing on the air-strip on Medjumbe Private Island in the remote northern Quirimbas Archipelago is an adventure — the runway runs the length of the island pretty much. Once here, however, you’ll have plenty of time to relax and soak up the out of this world views. The resort here is luxurious and perfect for honeymooners.
2. Dive Two Mile Reef
Mozambique has some amazing dive sites, including Two Mile Reef, which is just a quick speedboat ride from Bazaruto or Benguerra Islands in central Mozambique. What’s great about this reef is it has dives for all levels — from novice to advanced.
3. Swim with sharks
There are a number of places where you can swim with sharks in Mozambique, although the sharks here are not of the great white variety (the water is too warm) found in South Africa. One of the best places to dive is Ponta d’Ouro, near the South African border. Here you’ll see bull sharks, tiger sharks, hammerheads and whale sharks.
4. Go surfing
While in Ponta d’Ouro, you can also try your hand at surfing, as there are good breaks here. There is also good surfing around Tofu Beach.
5. Snorkel Inhaca
If you’re staying in Maputo and don’t have much time, then book a snorkeling trip to Inhaca, which is just across the bay from the capital city and has decent snorkeling. You’ll catch a boat over from the Maputo Waterfront, which is an exploratory adventure in its own right.
6. Chill out on Tofu Beach
It’s about an eight hour drive north from Maputo to Tofu Beach, which is a chilled out hippy style resort town famous for its stretch of sand as well as some 16 different dive and snorkel spots.
7. Look for whale sharks
Tofu is also known for its large whale shark population, and you’ll often see these slow moving and magnificent creatures while swimming in the area — plus unlike great whites, these are usually docile creatures.
8. Swim with horses
It’s a super cool experience to be on the back of a horse as he starts to swim and you can easily do this on the Mozambique coast. On Benguerra Island, try booking with Mozambique Horse Safari, pictured above.
9. Go sailing
Taking a sailing trip in a traditional Arab dhow is another unique experience. You can sign up for a multi-day trip that follows old Arab trade routes along the coast.
10. Look for marine life
Benguerra Island is known for its luxury accommodation like the &Beyond Resort, beautiful seascapes and its marine life. From whale sharks, to dugongs, to sea turtles, you’re sure to find it here.
11. Get off the grid on Ibo
Ibo Island is located in northern Mozambique in the Quirimbas Archipelago, which has a fascinating historic back story and is a great place for off-the-grid cultural immersion.
12. Learn to Kite-Surf
Medjumbe Private Island is also a popular kite surfing destination thanks to a combination of trade winds and flat water. You can learn at the resort.
13. Birdwatching on Vamizi
So far north it is practically in Tanzania, Vamizi Island is known for its excellent birding with more than 60 species of birds on the island. Sign up for a walking tour that will introduce you to the local fauna such as the baobab forests found here. Of course, just chilling on the beach is also nice, as the water here is beyond spectacular.
14. Deep-sea fishing
Vamizi is also known for some of the best deep-sea fishing in the Quirimbas Archipelago.
15. Walk Wimbi Beach
For some good exercise take a walk down Wimbi Beach in Pemba, in northern Mozambique. The white sand and turquoise water beach stretches for 12-kilometers.
