A short drive outside of Cape Town takes you to beautiful wine country with scattered small towns like Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, where the rich soils grow fabulous vino grapes. But there’s no reason to feel like you have to leave the kids behind with the babysitter before you clink glasses. Instead, bring them along with you, the Cape Winelands has plenty of ways to entertain both you and your kids. Here are some fun ideas of what to do with the kids in the Cape Winelands.
Ceres Zip Slide Tour – Ceres
Soar through the winelands through a series of zip lines in Ceres. Families can head over to Ceres Zipslide Adventures where there are eight slides ranging from beginners to advance to enjoy the bird’s eye view. A certified guide will instruct your family on proper and safe protocol before beginning your adventure from above. The tour is located high up in the Schurweberg Mountains below the Koekedou Dam.
Polkdraai Strawberry Farm – Stellenbosch
In between winery visits, swing by the Polkdraai Strawberry Farm in Stellenbosch where you and your little ones can go berry picking. With prices as little as R40 per person, families can fill up their buckets with the ripest strawberries of enormous proportions. Families will have access to several amenities like hopping aboard a tractor for a ride, playing miniature golf, face painting and pony rides. Before leaving to go home, stop by the farm’s own food and wine shop to take home a bottle of wine or a homemade pie.
The Franschhoek Motor Museum – Franschhoek
Do your kids have a love for speed and all things motor? Then they’ll love the Franschhoek Motor Museum, a world-class exhibit showcasing fabulous vintage sports cars (some dating back to the early 1900s). Other vehicles found at the museum include luxury cars like a Rolls Royce from 1936 and a Bugatti Type 23 from 1925. There’s a cafe on-site for your hungry kids and afterwards, families can go on the Anthonij Ruperty Winery tour on a trolley that picks them up at the museum.
Swim with Seals at Plettenberg Bay
Anyone that’s familiar with the Cape Winelands knows that the area is surrounded by the sea so it makes perfect sense to take your adventures with your kids there. Plettenberg Bay is home to Offshore Adventures, where families can come face to face with the South African fur seals. Unlike the sharks, the seals are quite friendly and curious about their human visitors. Families will be escorted by a certified divemaster and for thirty amazing minutes, they can snorkel along and observe the cute, furry animals in their natural habitat. Don’t forget to bring waterproof cameras to make your friends back at home jealous.
Giraffe House
Less than an hour from the city and located nearby plenty of wineries, this fun destination has lots of wildlife (more than just giraffes) to entertain the kids. Inside Giraffe house, you’ll find an open-air sanctuary where you can see meerkats, zebras, springboks, ostriches, crocodiles, tortoises, caracal and much more. If it’s your kid’s birthday or you just feel like having a blast, you can reserve the whole place to yourself for a party.
