Hotel Of The Week: LUX Tamassa Resort, Mauritius

The laid-back LUX Tamassa resort on the south coast offers some of the best value in Mauritius. A four-star property offering five-star service, it’s an ideal choice for family travellers looking for value for money.

First, the downside: the architecture is outdated, and the red-roofed double- and triple-story blocks are a far cry from the more modern layouts found elsewhere on the island. However, indoors Tamassa has revamped the look and feel of the resort and the rooms are light, bright and airy, although they are a touch on the small side. The sea-facing Beach Rooms are the pick of the bunch, set a short walk from the white coral sands.

tamassa-resort.jpgThe LUX brand prides itself on its quirkiness, and this playful character comes through across the Tamassa resort. There’s a pop-up screen on the beach for movie nights, a London phone booth offering free phone calls home, and a food truck at the pool dishing up damn fine burgers.

The food offering here is more limited than at other resorts, but you certainly won’t go hungry. The buffet spread at Show offers plentiful breakfasts and dinners, while beachfront Playa does decent Mediterranean cuisine during the day. And there’s the burger truck, of course.

LUX Tamassa is also an all-inclusive resort, which means everything from your meals to house wines to unlimited ice cream from the resort’s old-school parlour are all included in the cost. Don’t go ordering the Champagne and you shouldn’t face any nasty surprises on checkout. Most activities are also included, with plenty of boat trips and kayak excursions to keep the family entertained.

And that’s precisely who should book here: with a sizeable kids’ club, this is a resort aimed squarely at family travellers. It’s comfortably upmarket, rather than luxurious, and while the bells and whistles may not match other resorts, the abundance of value makes it a superb choice on the south coast.
