The Protea Hotel Wanderers is a 4-star hotel located close to Johannesburg’s business hub, the Sandton CBD, as well as the trendy suburbs of Illovo and Rosebank. The high-end and boutique shopping precinct, Melrose Arch, is also just round the corner. This hotel’s standard double rooms offer simple functionality that’s suited for either the business or leisure visitor to Joburg. The rooms are by no means spacious or luxurious (although the king-size bed is a huge plus), and the bathrooms aren’t fancy – but if a hassle-free stay with a clean, comfy room minus the bells-and-whistles is what you need, then this hotel is more than adequate.

For the business traveler, the Protea Hotel Wanderers offers a decent workspace in-room (complete with marble top), as well as 500MB free Wi-Fi per day and a few Internet kiosks near the lobby (although there didn’t appear to be fax or photocopying facilities). There are also conference facilities attached to the hotel, which can host up to 100 delegates. If guests tire of the hotel’s facilities – which are somewhat limited – the adjacent Wanderers Sports Club features a classy business lounge and sports bar. Guests can become temporary members of the sports club, which also has tennis and squash courts, a restaurant, and a children’s play area.

The hotel has a sign outside that states ‘World-famous for our apples’, and a nice quirk is that a red apple can be found in the room upon arrival. I’m not sure if they can be called ‘world famous’, but it tasted pretty good. The hotel’s restaurant is also called The Big Apple, and its prices are reasonable -– as is the room service menu (Mains from R52/ 5 USD). A small 24-hour coffee/cocktail bar (with an Express Deli) and a spacious glass enclosed smokers’ area (with a selection of cigars) is next to the restaurant. A full continental breakfast is available at an extra charge of R115 / 11 USD.

The décor of the hotel isn’t impressive, and the lobby’s furniture has a tacky feel. The carpets are a bit garish in the corridors, but the rooms are fitted with maple wood fixtures and neutral colours. Service is great – you’re greeted with a smile and staff makes one feel comfortable and at-home.

Guests have access to an outdoor pool and indoor gym (although this has limited hours, but open from 5am). The hotel also has a transport and information desk. Parking is free.
