Pretoria is inviting couples to declare their everlasting love for each other on a bridge inspired by the Pont des Arts in Paris.
Couples will be encouraged to attach a padlock on a new specially designed bridge near Huckleberry’s Restaurant in Magnolia Dell.
The fad of putting padlocks on bridges began in 2008 at the Pont des Arts, which quickly became a pilgrimage site for romantics from around the world.
Other cities then began hopping on the “romantic bridge” bandwagon, with Hohenzollern Bridge in Cologne, Germany, Puente de Isabel II in Seville, Spain, and the Tower and Millenium Bridges in London all following suit.
The fad has taken its toll on Pont des Arts, however. The weight of all that additional metal started causing damage to the ancient bridge and Parisian authorities recently started asking tourists to take selfies rather than affix padlocks.
The Pretoria bridge was conceived as a partnership between Marriage Week South Africa and Cool Capital 2014 Biennale, which hope to put Pretoria on the map as a romantic getaways for lovers from around the country and world.
The bridge will open with a festive soiree on September 6. Tickets for the the event are available on iTickets for R200 and participants will receive an engraved padlock to declare their love on the bridge.
