Jinja is an outdoorsy kind of town; green and lush and with hot temperatures that make you want to sit outside beneath a cool breeze from fans. So when in Jinja, it makes sense to visit outdoorsy kinds of places, and thankfully there are lots of them. The Keep Café, located about halfway along Iganga Road, is among the best. It has a cool indoor area and a wide outdoor terrace with rattan armchairs, soft cushions to sink into and large palm trees.

The Keep’s specialties are breakfast and brunch, so come expecting good coffee and the kinds of brunch dishes you can get in America – minus, of course, the great surrounds and the fact that here you’re close to the source of the Nile. There are regular themed nights here, including Mexican and Italian nights, as well as ice cream socials (sounds good to us), karaoke nights and family movie nights. Good, wholesome fun all round.

We stopped by on a hot day so we tried an iced vanilla latte, which is normally a little fancy for our tastes, but it cooled us down. There are at least 14 kinds of hot coffee on offer, including café brave and turkish coffee. Iced coffees run the gamut from lattes and cappucinos to iced espressos and mocha sundaes. Soy milk is also available.

We tried a starter of something that The Keep calls ‘posho chips and salsa’. It was available in single or family size; this place is clearly a hit with those with kids in tow. Next up was a taco salad, made with shredded lettuce, refried beans, grated cheese, meat, crispy taco and a little hit of spice. It went down a treat. The menu also includes burgers, chicken melts, meatball subs and corn dogs. America in Jinja.

And of course, for a place that specialises in breakfast, it would be rude not to try the bagels. We popped back the next morning for a bite of a cream cheese jalapeno bagel. Highly recommended.
