From the moment you climb into the helicopter for the stunning five-minute transfer from mainland Mozambique, you’ll feel the gentle, luxurious beauty of Azura — one of the world’s most elegant honeymoon destinations. Love seemingly grows on the amarula and coconut trees, on the crunchy shell pathways that reflect against the light of the moon, and it laps against the soft white sands of Azura’s calming beach. Even the butterflies that flit between the fruit trees seem to be honeymooning. But Azura is not just for lovers; families and groups of friends come too, to shake off stresses and slip into the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, home to some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world.

Azura has 16 villas, including two private residences that can be booked by groups. The 10 infinity beach villas are strung out along the sand and come with their own infinity pools, garden sundecks, and private beachfront salas. Mozambican touches such as tiny calabashes for washing feet and hip wooden furniture complete the look. You’ll be greeted with fresh flowers and cold champagne, and there are indoor and outdoor, sun-warmed monsoon showers, as well as silky cowhind rugs, wicker hug chairs and bookcases. Best of all, each villa comes with its own personal Mozambican butler (with impeccable English) who will graciously cater to your every need while respecting privacy, and throw in a few surprises such as private breakfast picnics on the beach, and thoughtful, individually-tailored gifts on pillows at bedtime. The rooms are a WiFi-free zone, ensuring that nobody goes to bed with a computer instead of their lover, but there’s a well-stocked library with internet access, a flatscreen television, gorgeous coffee table books, and free iPads for guests to use.

Lunch is served in the restaurant or in the more low-key Gecko Bar, and includes light, fresh dishes (as well as hungrier options) like button mushrooms stuffed with crab, calamari lime salad, and apricot crepes with apple vanilla compote and dark chocolate. Activities are planned around you, and include snorkeling and diving tuition – instructor Vouter will talk you through the basics, and there’s a plunge pool for first-timers — as well as island drives, horse riding, star gazing, Landrover island drives, an exquisite new spa, and bird watching. The wonderful staff seem as thrilled to be at Azura as the guests, making this a hip, gentle island getaway never to be forgotten. There’s a focus on all things eco too; the gekka roofs on the villas are made from natural materials and there’s a scheme to contribute to the local school. A perfect marriage of luxury, magic and simplicity, we bet this is where you’ll want to spend your honeymoon.
